One for the dverse open link night.

Walking in the wind
Looking down through the woods
from the hill top lane,
when the wind blows warm and dry,
and the grey clouds roll
from the distant sea
with the roar of a warrior’s cry,
do you see the hind
as she ambles out
from tree shade, light and spry?
Or do your eyes still search
down the empty road
for the one who will not pass by?
wonderful Jane.

Thanks Di. We were looking down on a patch of uncultivated land, wind blowing hard and noisy, and a deer wandered out. She was totally unperturbed by the wind. It scares me when it blows hard. The verse I thought of, I realised had a familiar rhythm.

I hate the wind, always have, and that’s before it took me off my feet one day in the road. Later in life it meant fence repairs and panel replacements!

That’s a fear of mine too. That and trees falling on the house. You can’t hear anything over the noise it makes either, so if you’re walking in the lane you can’t hear a car approaching. There are so few of them it seems paranoid to have to keep looking over my shoulder just in case.

With electric cars, you can’t hear them anyway.

I don’t think I’ve ever met an electric car. Tractors is more the house style round here.

It’s a bit of a farce over here as there isn’t sufficient infrastructure to charge them and on long journeys, well, you might not get there|!

The motorways all have places to charge batteries, but it takes an age and it’s expensive. The solution is not to travel long distances by car, to take the train, but people want the car.

There is a lot of aggro here about the availability of charging points. If we had an electric car, we would never have been able to have three trips to the hospital in one day.

No idea what the charging possibilities are outside the cities and motorways. I don’t even know what they look like.

Softness paired with the force of the rolling clouds & the distant sea… I love how you put this together. A great poem!

Thank you. It struck me how little the deer was unsettled by the wind that was making me so nervous.

Jane, your poem feels like the closing stanza of the song you shared. Poignant and full of grace ❤

Thanks Lisa, I’m glad you heard it. When I wrote this I recognised the tune.

A gentle and beautifully composed poem, Jane! I do love encounters with deer (as you know) and walking in the wind. I especially love the sound in the lines:
‘and the grey clouds roll
from the distant sea
with the roar of a warrior’s cry’.

Thanks Kim. Meeting deer is always magical. I don’t like high winds though. The noise seems angry, and it masks all the other sounds.

It’s a tender observation.
They must be unsettled by wind like that, don’t you think?
The wind has picked up here, too, as I read this. 🙂

I think their sense of smell must be disturbed by it. The wind blows over all sorts of scents that they might find worrying.
Weather is up the creek here. The wind has finally dropped, but not before it dumped a lot of grey cloud.

Yes, of course, they smell all sorts of things that might disturb them (including people).
It’s cloudy here, but still pleasant. I think it’s going to get hot and humid again here this weekend.

I keep a low profile when they’re around. They have enough to worry about.
It’s freezing here today, and the wind is back.

I hope the weather improves. I know it’s been unseasonably cold in parts of the UK. Maybe you’re getting that.

Yes, there’s a massive cold weather front on the Atlantic. We’re on the edge of it. In Brittany they’re having very wild tides. Quite a few people drowned.

Oh, I didn’t know that about Brittany.

People are told to stay away from the coastline because of the conditions but they don’t. Those who drowned were swimming in it. It’s stupid, and it puts the lives of coastguards at risk.

It is stupid and sad.

Irresponsible. One man took his eleven year old stepson out and they had to be rescued by helicopter when divers couldn’t reach them.

Wow–to put a child at risk like that!

Kid’s mother must have been asking herself if she hadn’t made a huge mistake with that one.

Do you think the wind threw the deer off their game? I’m with you. High winds scare me and maybe the deer feel that way too? You would think their sense of smell would be affected. Sorry, I’m such a city girl. LOL!

The deer didn’t look as though she was too worried. Her hearing is much more acute than mine, so it’s possible/probable that she could hear far more in the wind than I could. I’m sure you’re right, that the sense of smell must get overloaded when it’s windy.
