First bird
In the early morning,
bright with moonlight,
I heard the first nightingale,
singing back the incoming dawn-tide,
singing for a mate still on the wing,
or asleep in some distant tree.
I listen to his persistence,
never pausing in his broadcast,
as if in the moment’s silence,
her wings and head heavy with flight
and the sands of Africa,
she might pass him by.
Beautiful 💜

Oh how, lovely! 💙
I haven’t heard the all-night mockingbirds yet.

I cheated. It was a chaffinch, not a nightingale, but I have no idea why a chaffinch was singing to the moon at 3am 🙂

That is strange. Do they migrate? Maybe it was confused by time zones. 🙂 I don’t think we have them here either.

No, they don’t migrate. They’re busy all day, and they’re flock birds, sociable. This one was maybe just a music maniac 🙂

Maybe trying out some new material. 😉

Ha ha! Maybe. It must get boring singing the same old same old all the time 🙂

The robins at my daughters’ apartment sing all night. Mine only start up in early morning. I wonder what the impulse is. I love your poetic imaginings. (K)

Thank you!
If they function like nightingales it’s to attract a mate. Some of our blackbirds also sing all night but I have no idea why, or why only some of them.
