Oblivion

There was no mistaking the Oracle’s message this morning.

Oblivion

Still we sleep, sweat tangling our hair
in salt-sticky dreams of sea spray and boundless horizons,

while the rain on our skin pocks grave spots,
scorching forests leaf-bare,

and we bask in never-never lands
of languid water-murmur,
bird-lulled in rose-scented gardens.

  3. Our lack of self-awareness has no end to it. I’m starting to believe that our self-destructiveness will perhaps be a blessing for the survival of life itself. (K)

    1. It’s amazing the nonsense, the impossible rubbish we convince ourselves are fact, just because it makes our little selves feel better. I’m not one to harp on about how much better things were in the past when we had no choices at all about anything, but sometimes, I wonder if it wasn’t quite that bad.

      1. I don’t think its nostalgia to regret the evils of technology, even though I’m just as dependent on it as everyone else. But we are regressing in basic common sense for sure.

      2. I suppose the big problem is our idea of democracy and how it functions. It’s great to claim that everyone has an equal voice, but we only mean all citizens have the right to cast a vote in a ballot. The practice of herding voters into the booths with the promise of a meal hasn’t changed, just the size of the reward. Giving everyone a vote doesn’t give them equality and doesn’t give them the tools to make an informed choice. We need to ensure that every citizen with the right to vote knows what they’re doing, and that they have candidates worth speaking in their name. Plato knew that 2500 years ago, but we’re still letting oligarchs and corrupt, venal individuals make our decisions for us.

      3. That is so true. That’s why they keep trying to suppress actual education for a cherry-picking of history. And why we let the rich and their corporations spend all that money to elect candidates who will be beholden to them. Keep people poor and ignorant. Democracy doesn’t work unless you teach people to think for themselves and take the money out of the electoral process as much as you can.
