Lifetimes

Lifetimes

Blood is thick, sluggish,
reluctant to leave the home channel,
salmon-wise, returning to the source.

Do fish ache in their hearts
or does the great engine that pumps fins and gills
drive and drive onwards, mindlessly,
over obstacles and oceans, even into death?

We give in easier than the silvery fish,
stay where the living is softer
though the heart aches and aches.

We let the ship sail, wave it goodbye
through floods of tears that last a lifetime,
never understanding what is the one true god,
nor how to recognise its voice.

I used to do lots of things I didn't much enjoy. Now I am officially a writer. It's what I always wanted to be.

    1. It’s a sort of laziness, in the sense that it’s the easy path. We follow the crowd, pick up their habits, adopt their ambitions and aspirations. It doesn’t stop us getting all dewy-eyed about the past, nostalgia, roots and all the Hollywood-style maudlin emotions. When it comes down to it though, we always choose the soft lifestyle and the comfort of rose-tinted memories.

      1. None of them have the artists’ hand, no matter how “well done”. Plus AI is terrible for the environment. They don’t publicize that enough. Not just mildly bad, really really bad.

      2. So much of the stuff we ‘like’ is bad for the environment. Fast fashion, the never ending get-a-new-telephone disaster among others. But nobody every thinks about the wasteful use of resources junk like this generates. Yes, it’s ugly. Even those that are supposed to be true ‘art’, the night/evening street scenes where every building has the same windows and they all have the lights on as if they’re on fire.

It’s funny (or not 😉 ), that I just wrote my Oracle/musings today, and I similar to your fish, I wondered if a rose remembered, but then I also had a fish at the end.
