Using the right words

Using the right words

Writing poems does not make me a poet,
any more than owning a colouring book makes me an artist,
any more than being a prickly customer makes me a hedgehog,
any more than disagreeing with your opinions makes me a fascist bigot.

I used to do lots of things I didn't much enjoy. Now I am officially a writer. It's what I always wanted to be.

    1. No, nobody attacked me, I’m just getting heartily sick of seeing certain poet people using their platforms to spout propaganda then call un-named people bigots because they disagree with said propaganda. Also the guff about poets occupying the moral high ground and being in such a great position to lecture the plebs. (And I have a migraine).

Thank you for saying I’m a poet xx I agree with Geoffrey Grigson that anyone who auto-proclaims themselves a poet is suspect 🙂

      1. We’re all just trying, Punam, or we should be. There are just different-sized ponds. Some people are content to be a king fish in a tiny pond. Others would rather be a minnow in an ocean of greatness.

  1. You are a poet.
I’m glad it wasn’t someone personally attacking you.
I think the internet intensifies people’s feelings of righteousness. But they know not of what they speak, especially what the words they throw around really mean. I can be guilty of that myself, I’m afraid. (K)

    1. Thank you. I like hearing that, even if I’d never dare say it.
We all get the words and the tone wrong sometimes, but I really object to these whited sepulchres with large platforms who insult the (usually) majority who don’t agree with their opinions.

      1. It’s very hard when you can see both sides. Those entrenched on the edges of one or the other don’t want to accept that they are not entirely right and those they are against are not entirely wrong. The self-righteous tone also bothers me.

      2. You’re not allowed to see the other side, to try to understand it and discuss differences. It’s vade retro satana, and getting strung up from the nearest lamp post. Coming from the defenders of inclusion and diversity, the oppressed minorities, it’s a bit rich.

      3. Of course not. All you end up with is spats of whataboutery. Meanwhile, the poor get poorer, the planet gets hotter, the rich get richer and the holier than thou get what they want, to be the heroes who tried but were defeated by the haters.
